There they were, standing in one of the most beautiful courtyards we’ve ever seen. Shivering from the cold but absolutely radiating with love. He turned around and saw her for the first time on their wedding day and they immediately started laughing and embracing. She kissed him so fast our shutters almost didn’t catch the moment. They pulled away and she wiped the lipstick from his face. I’m sorry, she said, I got lipstick all over your face. He looked at her more earnestly than anything we’ve ever seen and said, as long as it matches. And then the whole courtyard filled with their laughter. That side-splitting, cheeks-aching, so-in-love-it-hurts kind of laughter. From behind our cameras, we just looked at each other with tears in our eyes.
As wedding photographers, we’re given the most intimate access to one of the most important days in a couple’s marriage – the day that starts it all. We’ve met a lot of different kinds of couples since we’ve started. Some are so nervous their hands tremble all day. Some get this incredible jolt of energy that would make even the Energizer Bunny jealous. And then there are the couples who are so steady, so sure, so comfortable taking the leap to unity that it literally shifts and calms the air around them. That was Nancy and Josh on their wedding day. While most grooms would have been anxious about having lipstick on their face before portraits, Josh couldn’t have cared less. He just wanted to become Nancy’s husband.
Everyone we met at their wedding was infected by the joy. Every member of their bridal party was so sweet, so helpful and so invested in making the day the best it could be. Every guest had the biggest smile on their face during the whole ceremony. And while Nancy and Josh were missing a few very important members of their family – his mom and her dad – their spirits were infused into every single part of the day. And as Nancy and Josh recited their vows and assembled their unity cross, there was an outpouring of pride and love from their family that was humbling to witness.
Nancy and Josh, thank you, from the bottom of our heart, for giving us the privilege of being the ones to document the start of your marriage. For treating us like family, for trusting us completely, for making us laugh until our sides hurt and for letting us witness the immensity of your love. We are better people for knowing the both of you and we can’t wait to see what the rest of your lives and your marriage have in store for you.
